University of California (UC) Summer Abroad

UC Faculty-led Summer Abroad and Internship Programs

UC faculty-led Summer Abroad and Internship programs offer students short, intensive academic courses that are complemented with a wealth of excursions and cultural activities. All UC programs are built around UC courses and are led by world-class UC faculty, administered by a UC campus. Many provide opportunities for students to visit non-English speaking countries while doing their coursework in English. Class sizes are small—18-30 students—allowing for an intimate learning experience. UC Summer Abroad and Internship programs are open to all University of California students and students from other U.S. institutions.

Africa and the Middle East

Ghana – Pediatric Care and Reproductive Health Internships (UC Davis)

Join local medical professionals in the historic Children’s Hospital in Accra and see firsthand the various factors that directly affect the health of Ghanaian children.

South Africa – Animal and Zoological Management Internships (UC Davis)

Gain first-hand experience in wildlife handling and care, spending two weeks at Lory Park Animal Sanctuary and 2 weeks at Cango Wildlife Ranch.

South Africa and Malawi Evolution and Fish Biology in Southern Africa (UC Santa Cruz) 

Embark on an evolutionary expedition in South Africa, where students snorkel at Lake Malawi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and conduct hands-on fieldwork at the "Cradle of Humankind," where early human fossils were first uncovered. 

South Africa – Economic Development (UC Davis)

South Africa – Hospital Medicine and Health Disparities Internships (UC Davis)

South Africa – Social Movements and Public Health in South Africa (UC San Diego)

Social movements have played a vital role in public health research and outcomes in South Africa, from the protests to end apartheid to the work of the Treatment Action Campaign.

Asia and Oceania

Australia – Animal and Zoological Management Internships (UC Davis) 

This program, in partnership with Loop Abroad, provides students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in wildlife handling and care at Wildlife Habitat, a wildlife conservation center in Port Douglas, Australia and participate in a zoo internship led by zookeepers.

Australia – Exploring Marine Biology in the Great Barrier Reef (UC San Diego)

This Global Seminar combines classroom learning with field-based exploration of coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass meadows, and tropical rainforests. Students will snorkel on the reef, visit a marine turtle rehabilitation center, explore the Daintree Rainforest, and meet with conservation managers. 

Australia - Global Health - Australia & Contemporary Health: Minorities & Indigenous Populations (UC Los Angeles)

This program provides students with an immersive Global Health learning experience through firsthand clinical observations in Sydney, Australia.

Bhutan – GIS in the Land of the Thunder Dragon (UC Davis)

Learn how to use geographic information systems (GIS) in the peaceful, culturally rich, and biodiverse country of Bhutan in the Himalayan Mountains, where progress is measured in Gross National Happiness.

Japan – Agricultural and International Development Internships (UC Davis)

Japan  Genetics, Diversity, and Human Biology in Tokyo (UC San Diego) 

Students will draw connections to the genetics of pigmentation, examine how concepts in genetics are misused in public discourse, and explore the genetics of ancestry while considering the implications of diversity in relation to equitable access and outcomes in human health.

Japan – Introduction to Japanese for Anime, Manga Lovers! (UC Riverside)

This program offers an exciting opportunity for students who are passionate about anime, manga, and Japanese culture to not only immerse themselves in Japan but also put their language skills to the test in real-world settings.

Japan  Life Sciences in Japan (UC Davis) 

Study biochemistry while living in Japan. With ample free time, students can visit Osaka or Tokyo, shop, delve into manga, dine in foodie heaven, or relax in an Onsen town. 

Japan – Media and Cultural Studies in Chiba, Japan (UC Riverside)

This program provides students the unique experience of studying modern Japanese history, culture and film while being immersed in contemporary Japanese society.

Japan – Modern Japan (UC San Diego)

The seminar explores two questions: How has Japan navigated the narrow straits between perpetrator and victim during WW II? To help explore this question, the seminar also asks: how have other countries dealt with profound historical trauma and nation building?

Japan – Mokuhanga Printmaking in Japan (UC Santa Cruz)

Learn the skills and tools of classic Japanese Mokuhanga woodblock printmaking known as the “Ukiyo-e technique” widely studied by artists today. Acquire first-hand knowledge of historical prints and other art media through class field trips to museums and galleries.

New Zealand – Environment, Green Tech, and Sustainability Internships (UC Davis)

France – ELTS - Exploring Sustainability in Nantes, France (UC Los Angeles)

This summer program offers a unique opportunity to explore how Nantes, a green capital of Europe, started its journey on becoming part of the solution to climate change and how its citizens actively support their city’s sustainability. 

France – Global Internships: Paris, France (UC Berkeley)

Gain first-hand knowledge, connections, and international work experience through an academic internship in Paris, France. On this program, students will undertake a professional internship opportunity to build transferable skills in the career field of students choice and learn about French culture and history through an on-site course taught by a Berkeley instructor.

France History: Medieval to Modern Paris (UC Los Angeles)

Weaving lectures, walking tours, and short day trips into one, this program in Paris presents a two-fold approach to the histories of the kingdom of France in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. 

France – Introduction to Biological Psychology (UC Davis)

Apply principles of biology to the study of psychology, learning about the working of the mind in humans and animals.

France  Introduction to Winemaking (UC Davis)

Learn the basics of wine making while visiting many of the major French wine regions and accessing many elite wineries.

France  Mediterranean France in Marseille (UC Santa Cruz)

This program will allow students to study French history and politics in Marseille, a port city that has a rich tradition of immigration, activism, and cultural production. The group will meet with urbanists, musicians, activists, historians, and film-makers.

France – Paris, France: Language, Literature and the Arts (UC Berkeley)

Dive headfirst into French language and culture in Paris, one of the most beautiful and storied cities in the world! This program is designed to immerse students in the language and day-to-day rhythms of French culture.

France – Paris, France: Muslims in the West: Immigration, Refugees and Islamophobia (UC Berkeley)

This study abroad course examines the modern Muslim presence in France and Western Europe, including immigration, refugee history, and the unfolding political, social, intellectual, economic, architectural, currents in the country.

France  Sign Language Studies in Paris (UC San Diego)

Some estimates claim that one third of the signs used in ASL today are related to French signs. The two languages, however, are not mutually intelligible. Practice with French signs for many basic concepts will enable students to experience how comprehension can be achieved through an implicitly negotiated process of creating bridges between signs of different languages. 

France  Sixth in Provence (UC San Diego)

This Global Seminar is the perfect opportunity to explore a region through food and narrative, reflecting on taste as sites where culture, immigration, family, globalization, and more meet. Provence is an incredible site to explore these questions with its famous French film festival and local markets.

Germany – Berlin: The Psychology of Identity, Love, and Relationships (UC Berkeley)

Study Abroad in Berlin, a city of striking contrasts of history and modernity; a city with a complex past which continues to inform its present; and a city with vibrant present day movements for progressivism, acceptance, and creativity. 

Germany  Contemporary World History in Berlin (UC San Diego)

Students will explore late 19th and 20th century history through extensive visits to Berlin's many museums and historical sites. Because the city was the site of two of the most oppressive versions of authoritarianism in the Nazi years and under communist rule, there is simply no place better than Berlin for presenting this historical material.

Germany – ELTS - Diverse Berlin: Culture and Language in Context (UC Los Angeles)

Explore Berlin, a city that has impacted modern Europe and the world like few others, through various lenses: culture, politics, architecture, art, and urban history, and take courses in German.

Greece – Chios, Greece: Mediterranean Nutrition and Food Systems (UC Berkeley)

Discover the importance of traditional foodways by examining key elements of the Mediterranean dietary pattern, discussing how various factors promote human and planetary health, and experiencing Mediterranean food culture.

Iceland  Thermodynamics in the Land of Fire and Ice (UC Davis)

Ireland – English - In the Heart of the Hibernian Metropolis: Literary Dublin (UC Los Angeles)

Using the city of Dublin as your locus, students in this course will read a variety of major works written by Dublin writers. The course, MCS 190 (Drug Policy), introduces students to drug policies in both Spain and the United States. The course, MCS 160, explores the development of mass incarceration in the US and its comparison to Spain's general approach to crime.

Spain – Educational Psychology in Spain (UC Riverside)

Students will study linguistic and cultural diversity in Spain and its connection to California; multicultural and bilingual development and its relevance to the education and psychology professions; and school psychology foundations from a scientist-practitioner perspective.

Long a nation of emigrants, Spain has become a migrant-receiving country in the twenty-first century, and the majority of migrants hail from Latin America. Who are the Latin Americans who migrate to Spain and why do they do so? What, if anything, do they have in common with Latin American migrants and their Latinx progeny in the United States?

Spain – Linguistics in Madrid and Bilbao, Spain (UC Riverside)

Study Linguistics in the local context of the Basque Country, Spain, with a focus on the Basque language as well as the development of Spanish. Rather than just reading about how languages work, we will directly investigate the grammar of these languages for a first-hand perspective on linguistic structure. 

Spain – Madrid, Spain: Interculturalism in the Crossroads (UC Riverside)

Barcelona is the perfect setting to examine, discuss, and experience issues of social cognition and the effects of cultural norms on how individuals interact. Weekly field trips to some of the city’s unique artistic sites will give students first-person perspective on the issues discussed in class with respect to mirror neurons and art.

Spain  Spanish Memories, African Hopes, through Literature and Film (UC San Diego)

This Global Seminar will examine some of the major themes of the 18-20th Century in their global meaning, with a focus on Spain and its relations with North Africa. Field trips to Morocco and Madrid to see architecture and meet groups working with immigration issues.

Switzerland  Geology Adventures in the Swiss Alps (UC San Diego)

This Global Seminar will focus on Earth science and geology in the Swiss Alps—a truly amazing and spectacular region. Switzerland is host to incredible natural beauty, including towering mountain peaks, majestic glaciers, massive waterfalls, pristine mountain lakes, and more. 

United Kingdom – Art in a Globalized World: UK (UC Santa Cruz)

In this immersive studio art class students create site-responsive artworks that explore art in a global context. Students create site responsive artworks: drawings, zines, graphic works, animation, photographs, installations and performances in response to our visits to museums, galleries and exhibitions in London and Brighton UK.

United Kingdom – Applied Research in London: Indigenous England (UC Riverside)

The program will provide students with an opportunity to assess the ways in which Indigenous presence extends beyond the United States. The program will focus on three subject areas: applied research; history, culture, and art; and public humanities projects.

United Kingdom English - London, City of Transformations (UC Los Angeles)

Gain an intimate knowledge of London, discovering, walking and mapping the psychogeography of the contemporary capital while recovering the hidden traces of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Costa Rica – Sea Turtles and Tropical Ecology in Costa Rica (UC San Diego)

The New World tropics are a monument to biodiversity.  A small patch of forest in Costa Rica may contain more kinds of trees, birds and insects than all of North America. Our destination, Ostional, is the scene of a regular wildlife spectacle—the mass nesting when hundreds of olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) sea turtles come ashore to lay eggs.

Costa Rica – Wildlife, Conservation, and Veterinary Medicine (UC Davis)
