Accommodations
CEA coordinates housing for program participants. Students will have the option to live in local homestays with Irish families or in shared apartments with other students. There will be an additional charge for the apartment option. See fees page for full details.
Homestays
Irish homestays are located within greater Dublin and are generally in more suburban areas outside of the city center (typically, homestays are located within 45 minutes of the CEA Center by public transportation). Students will have their own furnished room and share a bathroom and living area with other members of the household. Homestays will provide bed linens, sheets, a pillow and a comforter, but students need to provide their own towel. Laundry (once per week) is also included. Students will be provided with a daily breakfast and dinner, seven days per week, and share the family’s typical meal plan. Homestays are equipped with high-speed internet connections, though uninterrupted connectivity in equipped homestays is not guaranteed. Some homestays are equipped with WIFI, while others will have ADSL cable connection. Living with a homestay family can be a great way to learn more about the host country and students will have a special link to the local culture and customs.
Apartments
For an additional fee, students may select an apartment within a student residence hall. Apartments come fully furnished and are equipped with a fully functional kitchen with basic appliances and utensils (oven, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, iron/ironing board). Students will be provided with sheets, a pillow, and duvet slip, but will need to provide their own towel. Coin operated laundry facilities are available onsite (washers only; it is not common to find dryers in Ireland). Students can prepare their own meals in apartment kitchens or eat out. Apartments are located in close proximity to grocery stores, restaurants, movie theaters, and the local nightlife district of Temple Bar. The commute time from student housing to the CEA Dublin Center varies; however, it typically does not exceed 30 minutes.
UC Davis reserves the right to change the accommodation location. Should this be necessary, we will arrange alternative lodging. Please note that elevators, air conditioners, and other modern conveniences may not be available in all locations.
Meals
Homestay students receive breakfast and dinner daily. Students in the apartments purchase their own meals at local markets or restaurants.
Excursions & Activities
Excursions in and around in Dublin are an integral part of the program and are covered by the program fees. Students have the opportunity to participate in a guided tour of Belfast; and a day trip to Glendalough and Bray, which includes a guided tour and admission to an early monastic site, interpretive center, group hike, and a visit to the seaside resort of Bray. Additional cultural activities include:

- Midterm group meal

Ireland’s capital city is also an important commercial and economic center, making it the ideal place to gain hands-on experience through an internship. See centuries of British influence as you explore Dublin’s elegant Georgian squares, spacious parks, and impressive public buildings. Live where generations of famous Irish playwrights, writers, musicians, and singers have found inspiration. Get to know the city’s modern-day mix of recent immigrants from around the world, all set in the rich context of Irish culture. When you study abroad, the opportunities to immerse into Dublin’s unique mix of old and new are endless.
Local Highlights
Iveagh Gardens
These beautiful public gardens in the center of Dublin offer an oasis of peace and tranquility in the midst of the city.
Blessington Basin
Often regarded as Dublin’s secret garden, Blessington Basin is conveniently close to the city center and CEA. Much of the park is taken up by a large lake and fountain, both unusual features for a Dublin park.
Cake Café on Camden Street
The Cake Café's leafy courtyard is a peaceful oasis in the city center. Relax over sugar-dusted sponges, lemon slices, the most excellent coffee, baked egg and soldiers, or that infamous Irish treat, beans on toast.
Honest to Goodness Café
Located across the street from the CEA Center, this café offers excellent and modestly priced sandwiches, as well as hot and cold dishes in a busy (but friendly) environment.
Cliff Hike from Bray to Greystones
One of the highlights of walking in County Wicklow is this well-maintained, 4.3-mile walk that leads you from Bray to Greystones along the scenic coast. Those spectacular ocean views and sightings of marine wildlife along the way are sure to help you work up an appetite, so grab a bite in Greystones before jumping on light rail (DART) for your easy return trip to Dublin.
Study Abroad Advisory of Student Risk
Participation in this UC Davis Study Abroad program requires travel to and extended living in a foreign location(s) abroad. UC Davis Study Abroad endeavors to reduce and mitigate risk wherever possible. However, the environments and risks associated with living in these locations are substantially different from those found during a regular course of study at UC Davis. All participants must download and review the following information prior to departure. Any questions should be directed to the Program Coordinator.
