Undocumented students and students with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status are advised that on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, President Trump announced an end to the DACA program. This policy change may lead to immediate changes in laws and immigration policies related to undocumented statuses, advance parole, and the ability to travel abroad. This change is also likely to have severe impacts on those planning to travel and, especially, on those who are already abroad.
Undocumented students or students with DACA status who are currently abroad and are not already in contact with UC Undocumented Legal Services or the AB540 and Undocumented Student Center at UC Davis are urged to do so immediately. The Center can interpret the legal implications of this change in Federal immigration policy and provide advice to undocumented travelers. Students travelling abroad on Advance Parole are advised to return to the U.S. immediately; however depending on Congressional action a return to the U.S. may not shield against future deportation. The AB540 and Undocumented Student Center can provide further assistance and student advising on a case-by-case basis.
Students who are not abroad, but are considering ANY travel abroad – study abroad or otherwise – should also consult with the AB540 and Undocumented Student Center before making plans. Enhanced patrolling exists near domestic borders, so undocumented students may be at heightened risk for investigation even for travel within the U.S. Questions about U.S. travel should also be directed to the AB540 and Undocumented Student Center. If you are not a UC Davis student, you may have similar resources for undocumented students at your home campus.
