Internships and Culture in London

Each internship program pairs UC Davis Study Abroad with a partner organization that manages the personalized internship placements; arranges accommodations and excursions; leads onsite orientations and optional social events; and provides 24/7 emergency support. As part of the placement process for this program, participants will first enroll through UC Davis Study Abroad and then complete a supplemental application for the partner organization associated with their particular program.

Although Study Abroad partners with outside organizations for some aspects of the program, the official provider for these programs is UC Davis Study Abroad, and course credit is issued by UC Davis.

The partner organization for British Culture & Internships in London is CAPA International Education. CAPA will place students into customized internships for 20 hours per week in a field related to their areas of interest. Internship courses (92 or 192) are available for credit on a Pass/No Pass grading basis only. 

NOTE: All credited internships will be sponsored by a UC Davis faculty member from the English Department. Students will receive transcript notation for their internships. Internships are not paid internships.

Internship Placement Process

All students participating in this program are required to complete and submit a CAPA Internship Application, a Resume (known in the UK as a Curriculum Vitae or CV), a Personal Statement, a police background check, and two letters of recommendation (one academic, one professional). After being accepted into the program, you will receive a copy of the Internship Application and instructions for completing the other documents. Failure to submit a complete internship application by the deadline can lead to dismissal from the program. If you are thinking about applying to this program, it is most advantageous to start thinking about these additional requirements now. Additionally, you may visit CAPA’s internship advising website for a sample resume, cover letter and portfolio, along with tips on how to construct these documents, and requirements for the application. In addition to the resume and cover letter, you will submit an unofficial transcript, police background check, professional letter of recommendation and academic letter of recommendation. 

Keep in mind that while we do guarantee an internship, we cannot guarantee a placement in any one particular interest area or niche preference within that area. Within the internship questionnaire CAPA asks for three distinct and broad fields in which you have interest so that we can make sure to facilitate a placement that will speak to your previous experience, current skills and future goals. Internship 

After students enroll in UC Davis Quarter Abroad London, there will be a separate internship application that is required in order to participate in the program. Students will receive information about deadlines for the supplementary application which will require a resume, cover letter, two letters of recommendation (academic and professional), police background check, and an online application to CAPA. Final internship placement will be determined just prior to departure and may require an in-country interview. Resume and Cover Letter Resources

We strongly recommend that all students meet with an advisor at the UC Davis Internship and Career Center or the Career Center on their home campus to have their resume and cover letter reviewed prior to submitting these documents to Loop Abroad. The ICC provides many online resources, such as resume, cover letter, and letter of recommendation examples.

Transcript Notation

Students participating in UC Davis Study Abroad Internships are eligible to receive Transcript Notation (TN). Transcript notation documents your academically approved internship on your official UC Davis transcript. By having your experience noted, it provides proof of where and when you participated in an internship. This is especially valuable for international internships that may be difficult for a prospective employer or program to contact.

Transcript Notation is a process you’ll start within the first two weeks of your internship placement through Handshake, the tool UC Davis Internship and Career Center uses to connect students and employers.
