Humboldt Research Internship Program in Berlin

Program Overview

Humboldt Research Internship Program in Berlin offers students the opportunity to become part of work teams at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and engage with academic research or entrepreneurial start-up projects on a high level. Students will gain valuable experience in your academic field of expertise and immerse yourself in Berlin life and culture.

UC Davis students can choose from projects in various academic areas, receive individual advising, and earn transcript notation. Online internships are also available.

  • DatesStudents can propose an independent time frame that works for them. From May to August, there will be an accompanying cultural program for all participating students.
  • Target GroupAdvanced Undergraduate (at least 2nd year), Graduate Students, or PhD Candidates.

Research and Start-Up Projects

Students can search through over 30 different research projects across a variety of fields, including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Musicology and Media Studies, Neurosciences, Physics, Psychology, Culture and Literature, and Start-Ups and Entrepreneurship. The overview page of each research project shows subject area, timeframe availability, and academic level. Click on more info to access the project and internship position descriptions along the top bar which includes project content, tasks for interns and project requirements.

Application Process and Timeline

Steps to apply:

  1. Review Humboldt Internship Program website.
  2. Select the research or start-up project you want to apply for and identify two back-up options as your 2nd and 3rd choice.
  3. Start your application through Humboldt Internship Program in Berlin through the MoveOn application portal.
  4. Gather and upload of the following required documents: Proof of identity, student ID, resume, cover letter, recommendation letter from a faculty member or employer, official transcript.
  5. Contact Paula Levitt at UC Davis.

After you Submit:

  • Wait for the program coordinator to contact you. You will receive a notification when your application documents are sent to the project supervisors.
  • Supervisors might ask for an online interview, phone call, or will send an email with questions to students they consider.
  • If accepted, you will receive an email with further instructions concerning the preparation of your internship.

Fees and Funding

Program Fee: None

Enrollment Fee: ~120 € Euros

Estimated Personal Expenses:

  • Visa costs
  • Round Trip Airfare 
  • Health Insurance (approx. 50 - 80 €/month)
  • Accommodation (approx. 300-500 €/month)
  • Miscellaneous Costs (food, phone, transportation card, internet, activities; approx. 300 - 500 €/month)

Funding: UC Davis Students are eligible to apply for program scholarships.
