The Community, Technology, and Sustainability in Nepal Winter Break Intensive program partners with Hands On Institute, offering students accommodations in shared hotel rooms and homestays, meals throughout the program, excursions to cultural and historical sites, and opportunities to collaborate on community development projects with local students while navigating the unique social and environmental challenges of Nepal.
Nancy Erbstein, an associate professor in the School of Education and Associate Vice Provost, focuses on youth civic engagement and well-being, inspired by her own study abroad experience in Nepal. Jonathan K. London, a professor in Human Ecology, specializes in environmental justice and community organizing, drawing from his work in the Brazilian Amazon, Nepal, and California, and co-leads Youth In Focus with Erbstein to empower youth through participatory research.
Students will collaborate with Nepali peers on interdisciplinary projects addressing local development, agriculture, public health, and more, while immersing themselves in Nepal’s social, cultural, and environmental changes.
Dr. Robert Wiener, Director Emeritus of the California Coalition for Rural Housing (CCRH), led the organization for 43 years, playing a key role in housing policy and financing efforts, and was honored with numerous awards for his contributions to affordable housing.
