This presentation raises critical concerns about the power asymmetries that are embedded within the dominant paradigm of international internships, volunteering, and service-learning in higher education. In particular, it critiques the awkward incentive structures that emerge when relationships are commodified and 'ethical partnerships' becomes an empty buzzword rather than an intentional practice.

UC Davis students, staff and faculty are invited to learn more about the UC Davis Widening Circles program and its attempt to disrupt these interlocking trends. It proposes an alternative vision of what it might mean for students to 'know the world' in an era marked by increasing connectivity as well as increasing inequality.

Our UC Davis Widening Circles program empowers students to access independent social impact internships and immersive global learning with grassroots organizations across 50+ countries in fields including health, engineering, education, human rights, sustainability, gender-based advocacy, and more. Alongside their internships, students will engage in ongoing critical dialogue and reflection about the complexities of striving for justice while crossing differences of culture and power and will create a series of digital storytelling posts that document their experiences through lenses informed by our course themes.

This program is one of the most affordable global learning programs offered through UC Davis and many students apply for additional funding to support their summer program. We will share resources available through the Global Learning Hub as well as the Internship and Career Center, including internship advising and funding available to both undergraduate and graduate students.
