Taiwan Through Literature and Film

Taipei, Taiwan

Arrive Date:  TBD   End Date:  TBD

Program Overview

Taiwan has produced some of the greatest Chinese literature and film in modern times, such as works by internationally renowned writers Bai Xianyong and Yang Mu and directors Hou Hsiao-hsien and Ang Lee. Taiwan is also a land of dramatic contrasts: a thriving IT industry existing side by side with the ancient arts of calligraphy and tea ceremony; “101”—the second tallest skyscraper in the world—side by side with Buddhist temples and Daoist shrines; a bustling urban culture side by side with breathtaking natural beauty. This program offers a unique opportunity to study Taiwan through literature, film, and art by integrating readings, film screenings, conversations with leading poets, writers, and scholars, as well as private lessons in calligraphy and tea. In addition, field trips to the National Palace Museum (with the best collection of Chinese art in the world!), sites showcasing different ethnic cultures, and performances are both fun and educational.
