Hello everyone! My name is Matthew Dea and I am a fourth year Biotechnology student.
Travel has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, as I moved around the world every few years. Botswana was the first country my family moved to. I have very vivid memories of stepping off that tiny propeller plane in Gaborone, taking in the surrounding environment, and realizing that this is just the beginning of a new chapter in my life.
Since then I also had the pleasure of calling South Africa, and then Uganda, home. I went to middle school, graduated high school, and made all my best friends in Uganda, so this is a country I hold close to my heart.
Coming to Davis, I could not let my wanderlust die down, so I began to to explore study abroad options in my freshman year. I received a scholarship to continue studying Chinese in Wuxi, China, during the summer of 2016. This was a spectacular experience and opened my eyes to the continent of Asia!
In Fall quarter of my senior year, I participated in UCEAP’s University of Cape Town program for an entire semester. It was so excited to return to Africa - this time as a university student - and study at Africa’s best university.
I’m always eager to share my experiences living and studying abroad, so I hope to see you in the UC Davis Study Abroad Center looking for a life changing experience!
