My name is Emi Abe and I am a third year Communication and Cognitive Science double major. Four years ago during the summer before my junior year in high school, I went to Sakaide, Japan with six other students as a part of a sister city exchange student program. Although I have been to Japan before to visit my family, it was such a great experience to see my family’s culture from a new perspective. Through going to a completely different area that I had not visited before and staying with a host family, I got the opportunity to be involved in the culture in a way that was not offered by being a visitor. As a student, I was an actual participant and not just a bystander to events like community parades, picnics, and traditional outings. I hope to experience this again on another study abroad adventure in the future!
As a communication major, I am very interested in meeting new people and learning about their cultures and traditions. Being more culturally competent by traveling and making more friends all over the world is my goal to reach by graduation.
The majority of my friends are going abroad to study in the near future and I am so excited to be a part of making their and other students’ dreams of studying abroad a reality. I look forward to being a part of the process of helping students pick the right program, making sure everything is arranged, and hearing back from them about their adventure studying abroad.
