My name is Caridad Villegas, I’m a fourth year Animal Science major and Spanish minor. I studied abroad in Madrid during the spring of 2018, and all I can say is that since I’ve returned, I’ve wanted nothing more than to hop on another flight to continue exploring this big, beautiful world around us.
From a young age, my parents instilled in me and my siblings this idea that we need to travel in order to gain insights from others around the world and to learn about ourselves as well. When I came to Davis, I already knew I wanted to study abroad in Spain; the idea of living in a country with so much rich history piqued my interest but what really hooked me was the country’s lively spirit. Since I already had this foundation, I began going to the study abroad office early and with the help of the various advisors, planning my dream trip.
I remember landing in Spain and realizing I was literally living what I had been envisioning for years. From the people I met, to the classes I took, everything about my study abroad experience just felt so right. Living on my own in another country really forced me to step out of my comfort zone in the best way possible, if I hadn’t I would have never been able to immerse myself in the culture that I had been admiring from the outside for so long.
Studying abroad is an opportunity I wish everybody could take part in since it one hundred and ten percent helped complete my college experience. The ten weeks I spent in Spain, traveling and exploring on my own and with my friends were the best of my life. This trip made me realize how much I love seeing different parts of the world, meeting new people and hearing their stories. I know that the idea of going abroad is a daunting one, but it’s something that has fulfilled me in so, so many ways and I can only hope to share my experience with anybody who’s thinking about studying abroad so they can be just as gratified as I am now.
