University Writing Program
Melissa Bender (Ph.D. English, UC Davis, 2009) is a Continuing Lecturer in the University Writing Program. She has led a quarter abroad internship program in Sydney, Australia, a pre-freshman study abroad seminar in London and Paris, The Grand Tour summer abroad program, as well as a USA Study program in New York, NY and Washington, DC. Her research areas include writing pedagogy with special interest in rhetorical approaches to disciplinary composition and source work; the rhetoric of public history; visual and material rhetoric; rhetoric of health and medicine; U.S. memoir and life writing. Her forthcoming publications include Who’s Your Source? A Writer’s Guide to Effectively Evaluating and Ethically Using Resources (Broadview Press 2019) and Contested Commemoration, an edited collection on the subject of public history in the United States (Routledge 2019).
Cheryl Purifoy is the Director of the Washington Program in the UC Davis Office of Undergraduate Education, where she oversees the administration, student services, internship development and placement, outreach and recruitment, financial and business management, and personnel administration for the program. She has 19 years of experience coordinating experiential education programs for UC Davis students, from Living and Learning Communities to the Center for Leadership Learning. Known for her guidance, Cheryl says “I encourage you to take academic and professional risks in an environment that is both challenging and supportive.” Cheryl will place Study Abroad students in internships and prepare them to make the most of the opportunity.
