Excursions and Day Trips

Munton’s Maltings

Baird’s is one of the oldest malting companies in the UK, and dates back to 1823. We will see how a modern slant has been out on to the age-old practice of steeping grain, allowing it to sprout and then dry it to produce a diversity of malts.

Elgoods Brewery, Wisbech

Elgoods is a family owned brewery that has been in business for more than 200 years. They produce a wide range of famous beers using traditional equipment that in some cases dates back to 1910. A historic and exciting experience.

Hop Garden

Hops, the spice of beer, growing in beautiful Herford and Worcester. A journey into one of the most charming of English locales.

Murphy and Son Brewery Suppliers

In a truly historic building in Nottingham, Murphy and Sons can trace their history back to 1887 and they remain one of the great suppliers of process materials to brewers large and small – from clarifying agents derived from fish swim bladders to material from seaweed that holds the bubbles on beer together.

About Nottingham

Nottingham is in the heart of England. Everyone has heard of Robin Hood and the nearby Sherwood Forest and of course the wicked Sherriff of Nottingham. But how many know that Nottingham is home to England’s oldest pub, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem. There are two professional soccer teams – one of them, Nottingham Forest, having won the European Cup. Nottingham is a great base, too, to strike off in all directions for a fascinating glimpse of England. Go north for historic York, the fabulous Yorkshire Dales and moors. Head west for the Roman walls of Chester, vibrant Manchester and then to Liverpool, where you can tour the McCartney and Lennon childhood homes. East will take you to Lincoln, home of the Magna Carta, and to North Sea (and ferries to Europe and Scandinavia). While south will take you to England’s second city Birmingham and to historic locales such as Stratford-on-Avon and the Cotswolds. Especially close by are places like the famous English home of the Dukes of Devonshire, Chatsworth House. Chesterfield, with its crooked church spire. The nation’s brewing museum – in Burton. And lots of places to watch cricket!
