Microbiology Lab in the Kingdom of Smiles

On Location

Accommodations

Students will be using the classroom and laboratory facilities at Assumption University, on their Biotechnology campus in the city of Bangkok in the Hua Mak region.

Students will be living in a hotel about a fifteen minute walk from the university. They will share a standard room with twin beds and a bathroom. The hotel has wireless internet, air conditioning, elevators, and a spa.

During the one-week trip to the tropical islands, students will be staying in resort hotels and beach bungalows.

UC Davis reserves the right to change the accommodation location. Should this be necessary, we will arrange comparable lodging. Please note that elevators, air conditioners and other modern conveniences may not be available in all locations.

Meals

Thailand’s culinary portfolio is diverse, rich and delightful. Soups, rice and noodle dishes are peppered with unique combinations of sauces and spices found nowhere else in the world. Fruit is fresh, cheap and plentiful.

Students will not have cooking accommodations in their hotel rooms, but eating out is very cheap—about $2-3/meal. There are plenty of locations surrounding the university and hotel that can provide breakfast, lunch and dinner. Your instructor will point out good places to eat during the on-site orientation. The hotel offers breakfast for a small fee.

All meals will be included during the week-long trip to the tropical islands, and there will be several group meals provided as excursions throughout the program.

Weather and Climate

July in Bangkok ranges from 90-100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 80 at night. While its wettest months are May, September and October, the tropical climate ensures it maintains an imposing humidity and regular showers year-round, despite its proximity to the ocean.

Bangkok.com: Bangkok has a tropical monsoon climate and holds claim to being the hottest city in the world. Sitting at the same latitude as Khartoum and Guatemala City, it is both hot and humid in equal measure. It may not be the warmest city in the world every day but, overall, it is unrelenting simply because it doesn't cool significantly at night. The two periods of April-May and September-October are the steamiest. The Southwest monsoons arrive between May and October and for many, this is a welcome respite.
