On Location

While in Cannes, you will stay in a living museum owned and operated by the La Napoule Art Foundation, a Franco-American foundation established in memory of the sculptor Henry Clews (1876-1937). The estate is located four miles from Cannes in a beautiful walled garden overlooking the Mediterranean.

In Switzerland, at the Locarno Film Festival you will stay in pleasant doubles with bathrooms at a youth hostel with easy walking access to all festival sites as well as to the Roman archeological site the city turns into nighttime festival.

After the film festival you will travel as a class to Milan, Italy for one night to make departure from the Milan airport more convenient.

UC Davis reserves the right to change the accommodation location. Should this be necessary, we will arrange comparable lodging. Please note that elevators, air conditioners and other modern conveniences may not be available in all locations.

Breakfast and lunch is included with your room at each location. Also, your class will enjoy Welcome and Farewell dinners together. These meals are covered by your Accommodations and Services Abroad fee. Other than the meals listed above, you are responsible for your own meals.

Excursions and Day Trips

The Locarno Film festival in Locarno, Switzerland. The Locarno festival is an international festival, usually regarded as the most important between the Cannes festival in May and the Venice festival in September. Like those two festivals, it is in a very scenic location: Locarno is in the lovely "lake region" of southern Switzerland/northern Italy, near Lakes Lugano and Como (where the original Bellagio is). We also have excursions to the Swiss Alps (to a mountain top), to Bellinzona (with 3-UN designated castles), and a ferry ride on the lake.

Study Abroad Advisory of Student Risk

Participation in this UC Davis Study Abroad program requires travel to and extended living in a foreign location(s) abroad. UC Davis Study Abroad endeavors to reduce and mitigate risk wherever possible.  However, the environments and risks associated with living in these locations are substantially different than those found during a regular course of study at UC Davis. All participants must download and review the following information prior to departure. Any questions should be directed to the Program Coordinator.

About Cannes, France and Locarno, Switzerland

From Lonely Planet:

"As you walk among the couture shops and palaces of La Croisette, the wealth and glamour of it all cannot fail to impress: admiring Ferraris and Porsches cruising by and celebrity spotting on the glitzy sunlounger-striped beaches and liner-sized yachts moored at the port are hot Cannes pastimes.

Whether Cannes' soul has managed to survive its celebrity-playground status is another question, but, there’s still enough natural beauty to make a trip worthwhile: the harbour, the bay, the clutch of islands off the coast and the old quarter, Le Suquet, all spring into life on a sunny day."

From Wikipedia:

"Locarno is the capital of the Locarno district, located on the northern tip of Lake Maggiore (Lago Maggiore) in the Swiss canton of Ticino, close to Ascona at the foot of the Alps. It has a population of about 15,000 (60'000 for the urban area including Ascona). The official language of Locarno is Italian. It is the 74th biggest city in Switzerland by population and the 3rd biggest of the canton Ticino, after Lugano and Bellinzona.

An important film festival, the Locarno International Film Festival, takes place every year in August in the Piazza Grande.

The Locarno Treaties were negotiated here in 1925.

In January 2004, the Italian historian Marino Vigano speculated that Locarno's castle may have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci."
