Animal Science (AMS) 198 - Draft Syllabus

Animal Science (ANS) 198. Directed Group Study (3 units, P/NP)

The first half of the seminar will begin with a lecture series during which background information about horse management and theoretical frameworks pertaining to animal welfare assessments will be laid out. Active learning components like peer teaching, discussions, and group activities will be interwoven into each lecture to enhance learning, and improve group cohesion through team building. Students will apply the theoretical constructs they learn to real situations during the second half of the Seminar Abroad. The class will visit a series of equine breeding and sports facilities and assess the welfare of horses at each facility. The facilities maximize the diversity of spaces (pastures vs. barns), management approaches, and horse breeds. To complete the animal welfare activity students will gather background information about the facility, evaluate the daily management routine, and conduct a full evaluation and final assessment of the current state of the facility and animals.
