UC Davis Quarter Abroad Australia
Australian Internships & Writing in Sydney
CAPA coordinates housing for program participants. Students will have the option to live in local homestays with Australian families or in shared apartments with other students. There will be an additional charge for the apartment option. See fees page for full details.
Australian homestays are located within Greater Sydney and are generally in more suburban areas outside of the city center. Students will have their own room with a shared bathroom. Breakfast and dinner is included every day and laundry will be provided once per week. An Internet connection is not guaranteed. Living with a homestay family can be a great way to learn more about the host country and students will have a special link to the local culture and customs.
CAPA apartments are centrally located in Sydney near Chinatown which is conveniently located by the new CAPA Center. Students will share apartments with other UC Davis students, and all apartments will have limited wireless internet. Students can prepare their own meals in apartment kitchens or eat out. Beyond typical apartment amenities, the complex has a large outdoor courtyard and community kitchen, a fully equipped gym, game rooms and a big screen TV, and a coin operated laundry on site.
UC Davis reserves the right to change the accommodation location. Should this be necessary, we will arrange comparable lodging. Please note that elevators, air conditioners, and other modern conveniences may not be available in all locations.
Homestay students receive breakfast and dinner daily. Students in the apartments purchase their own meals at local markets or restaurants.
Excursions and Day Trips
Excursions out and about in Sydney are an integral part of the program and are covered by the program fees. Past excursions included a tripto the Blue Mountains, kayaking in Bundeena, and a performance at the Sydney Opera House. Free and low-cost additional activities and excursions will be available through the CAPA Sydney Study Center.
Study Abroad Advisory of Student Risk
Participation in this UC Davis Study Abroad program requires travel to and extended living in a foreign location(s) abroad. UC Davis Study Abroad endeavors to reduce and mitigate risk wherever possible. However, the environments and risks associated with living in these locations are substantially different than those found during a regular course of study at UC Davis. All participants must download and review the following information prior to departure. Any questions should be directed to the Program Coordinator.
From Lonely Planet:
Sydney is the capital that other cities love to hate; with stunning surf and buttery beaches, glorious weather and glamorous people, world-class restaurants and outrageously fashionable bars, she seemingly has it all. And doesn't she know it.
Built around one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world, Sydney's shimmering soul reveals an iconic landscape that to many signifies `Australia'. The Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, myriad sandstone headlands, lazy bays and scalloped shorelines are breathtakingly beautiful. But while her neighbours might snipe that Sydney is all about fleeting physical fun, Sydneysiders know that there's more to this city than her good looks (even if Bondi Beach on a Saturday afternoon argues otherwise). She's Australia's oldest, largest and most diverse city with captivating monuments, urban galleries, magnificent museums, a vivacious performing arts scene and an edgy multiculturalism that injects colour to her outer suburbs. Give it a couple of days and you'll quickly realize that there's so much more to Sydney than soy lattes and sunbathing. Give it any longer and you'll probably never want to leave.

Weather and Climate
Sydney has a temperate climate, rarely dropping below 50°F at night. It will be spring when you are there so temperatures will increase as the program goes along.
Because weather is unpredictable, bring clothes that you can layer for ease of comfort. There may be some rain showers during your stay, so bring a jacket, poncho or umbrella and appropriate shoes for rain.
