Academics

UC Davis Summer Abroad Internships is an academic program that aims to enhance students’ education by incorporating academic coursework with experiential learning outside of the classroom setting. This program carries a total of 8.00 quarter units in six weeks.

Students on Summer Abroad Internship programs earn regular UC Davis course credit which may be used to fulfill degree, major, minor, General Education (GE) requirements. UC Davis students can use Summer Abroad courses to fulfill their academic requirements as listed in the General Catalog. Students from other campuses should consult with the academic advisors from their home campuses to determine whether courses taken on our programs may be used to fulfill their specific academic requirements.

Please see the Academics Student Resource page to learn more about applying Summer Abroad coursework toward your major/minor/General Education requirements.

Auditing is not an option.

*Note: Semester students who will apply for Summer Financial Aid should contact Summer Abroad to enquire about enrolling in additional unit(s).

Courses

Education Abroad (EAP) 192. Internship (6 units, P/NP)

Students will intern 35-40 hours per week at their program site and will be able to apply for transcript notation through the UC Davis Internship and Career Center.

Education (EDU) 198. Directed Group Study (2 units, P/NP)

Education Directed Group Study: This 2-unit course is intended as a forum to connect the work students do at their internship to its broader social and cultural context. Through online discussions students will have a community with whom to share their reflections and observations about their internship placements and to explore the significance of interning in an international context.

Prerequisites

Summer Internships Abroad will be enforcing the completion of Spanish (SPA) 1 or equivalent before departure. Prerequisites can only be waived by individualized consent of program coordinator—please contact the program coordinator if you wish to discuss this option. Failure to complete unwaived prerequisites can result in administrative withdrawal and fees owed accordingly.

While there are many options for students with beginning Spanish, there are some internships where intermediate to advanced level Spanish would be helpful. See On Location for a list of internship options.

SPA 1. Elementary Spanish Lecture/discussion—5 hours. Introduction to Spanish grammar and development of all language skills in a cultural context with special emphasis on communication. Not open for credit for students who have completed equivalent course 1S. Students who have successfully completed Spanish 2 or 3 in the 10th or higher grade of high school may receive unit credit for this course on a P/NP grading basis only. Although a passing grade will be charged to the student's P/NP option, no petition is required. All other students will receive a letter grade unless a P/NP petition is filed.
