Hello everyone! My name is Matthew Dea and starting in Fall 2017 I will be a third year Biotechnology student.

Travel has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, because I moved around the world every few years. The first country I moved to with my parents was Botswana. I have very vivid memories of stepping off that tiny propeller plane in Gaborone, taking in the surrounding environment, and realizing that this is just the beginning of a new chapter in my life.

Since then I also called South Africa and then Uganda home. I went to middle school, graduated high school, and made all my best friends in Uganda, so this is a country I hold close to my heart.

Coming to Davis, I could not let my wanderlust die down, so I began to to explore study abroad options in my freshman year. Nothing really caught my eye until very last minute when I received a scholarship to continue studying the Chinese language in Wuxi, China, during the summer of 2016. I’m always eager to share my experiences living and studying abroad, so I hope to see you in the UC Davis Study Abroad Center looking for a life changing experience!
